In this joint MSc programme, given in cooperation by Stockholm university and The Royal Institute of Technology, we are looking for highly motivated students who want a deeper understanding of mathematics and communication. Reasons to choose mathematics in Stockholm

Mathematics at the top of Europe:
As a joint programme between Stockholm university and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), this education is unique in offering a broad expertise among teachers, an extensive pool of elective courses and a double MSc degree. The learning environment is international and dynamic with lectures being given both at Stockholm University and KTH. In addition to this, students are welcome to attend the Stockholm Mathematical Center's general colloquium, with distinguished international speakers such as Field medalist Martin Hairer (Sept. 2016).

Studies closely connected to a strong research environment:
Stockholm offers a rich mathematical environment, where master students are actively encouraged to participate in research seminars within the Stockholm Mathematics Center (SMC). All teachers in this programme are active researches and two teachers (one from each university) generally give the courses in cooperation. As a result, our students meet more researchers through their education, compared to similar MSc programmes elsewhere.

Programme students are assigned a personal mentor:
All students are provided a mentor for guidiance when selecting courses and help prepare for thesis work in a preferred subject. The mentor is a researcher at one of the two universities.

Programme structure

This 120 credit* program is organized into three different course blocks, starting with a foundation of advanced level mathematical base before designing your specialisation in the second semester. The broadening block comprises mandatory courses in science theory, communication of mathematics and optional courses that can be chosen without condition on subject or level. The final component of your studies is the degree thesis where you indepentently plan, execute and report your own research project, supervised by one of our researchers.

Master courses in mathematics are generally given at a 25% pace, stretching over the whole semester, with one teaching occasion per week. Although there is often only one weekly meeting, teachers are keen to be available for students during the rest of the time, if needed. Students can also get support from their mentors, the Programme Coordinators or the administrative staff.

The programme outline is illustrated below. The blocks are evenly distributed over the study period, and are not taken in sequential order. Please note that this outline can be subject to change, and that the list of elective courses is updated each academic year.

*The Swedish credit system is compatible with the European standard ECTS. 30 ECTS is equivalent to one semester of full time studies.

Career prospects

Mathematical education is applicable in all fields where advanced mathematical methods are used. Examples include numerical calculations in technology and natural sciences, estimation of probability, price setting in the financial sector and the development of algorithms used to ensure secure transfer of data. This programme is a great foundation for PhD studies (in which a third of our graduated students proceed) in mathematics or related subjects, and offer research and development in the industry and business sector. Application procedure

The application period for our Master's programmes starting at autumn 2017 opens at October 17. Your application should be sent no later than January 16 (midnight CET), which is best done by following these three steps.


The scholarship scheme at Stockholm University is aimed at especially qualified students coming from countries outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland and who are required to pay tuition fees for studies. Show scholarships offered by Stockholm University.

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from certain countries. The scholarships will be awarded for master’s studies in Sweden, starting in autumn and covers both living costs and tuition fees. Show scholarships offered by the Swedish Institute.
