History of the department of mathematics

Mathematics was the first subject taught when Stockholm University was founded in 1878 and the first professor at the university was Gösta Mittag-Leffler, in mathematics.

The first female math professor

The first female professor of mathematics in history was Sonja Kovalevsky (1850-91), at Stockholm University.

Mathematical Statistics and Insurance Mathematics

In 1929 the Institute of Insurance Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics was founded to benefit insurance mathematics in Sweden. The institute is now part of the Division of Mathematical Statistics. Its first research leader was professor Harald Cramér.
